Misconceptions about fertility

unhappy coupleYou may think you know everything there is to know about fertility and conception, but there is a lot more to understanding your fertility than you think.

Trying to get pregnant is difficult enough as it is, so if you are trying for a baby, make sure you don’t get bogged down with some of the most common fertility myths and tales.

Myth 1: Waiting for ovulation is the answer

Many women think that having sex on the day of ovulation increases their changes of conception. But, if you wait for ovulation before you have sex, it may actually decrease your chances of getting pregnant because it causes you to miss your window of opportunity. An egg is only viable for 24 hours after ovulation, so you should be trying from a couple of days ahead of this time.

Myth 2: Knowing your position helps you conceive

If you think the position you take during sexual intercourse influences your chances of conceiving, then think again. Semen will naturally come out of the vagina after ejaculation, while some sperm is left in the neck of the womb where it can make its way toward the egg. This happens regardless of the sex position you and your partner take.

Myth 3: Holding off is key

Some women also think that holding off on sex will improve the sperms quality and increase their chances of getting pregnant. However, since millions of sperm are produced in the testicles on a daily basis, the older sperm can actually stop the newly produced and healthier sperm from meeting the egg.

Try not to stress about getting pregnant. We know it’s easier said than done, but if you obsess over trying to get pregnant, you can influence your body’s chemistry in a way that it will affect your fertility. If you stay positive about getting pregnant, your outcome will be better than someone who always stresses about conceiving.
