With two weeks ahead of no school and lots of time off, many mums are probably already pulling their hair out stopping sibling fights, feeding endlessly bored kids and trying to keep the home happy even if it's lashing outside!

If this sounds like you, here are five ways to keep your tot stimulated and learning at the same time:

Exercise

Ok, while we don’t mean take your little one to the gym with you, exercise increases the blood flow to the brain which can actually help increase your little one's ability to learn. With this in mind, every day, make sure you schedule in some fun running time, swimming or even a bicycle trip around the park.

Read with them

We all love nothing more than cuddling on the couch reading our little ones a book or two, but this mid-term, have them read to you – well, sort of. Engage your youngster in what is going on in the story, question what’s on the page and encourage them to think aloud about what might happen next. This will go a long way in helping them with their reading skills.

Actions speak louder than words

Most of us learn by doing and the same can definitely be said for your toddler. Count blocks or cubes with them, weigh foods on your at home scales or even in the supermarket, bake cakes and encourage them to help with the measurements – all these things will help introduce them to maths and numbers.

Create an art corner

Let your toddler indulge their creative side by setting up a specific art corner for them. Teach them how to express their emotions through creativity, improve hand eye coordination and have some fun! Fill it with paints, colours, paper and stickers.

A nature journal

Teach your kids all about the outdoors by helping them create a nature journal and spend the entire break filling it with things from outside that interest them. Before you put the item into your journal, talk about their findings and if you need, search the internet for more information.
