It is possible to get a golden tan without exposing your skin to the damaging ultraviolet rays of the sun. Spray tans, which have become very popular in recent years, can be done in the privacy of your home, or you can go to a salon. Newer products work much better than the products of the past, and if you prepare your skin properly, your tan will be streak-free and will last a couple of weeks.

Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is the chemical that is used in all sunless tanning products. When applied, the amino acids in your skin react to the DHA, causing a darkening of the skin. The layer of skin cells that becomes darker will slough off after several days. DHA is also a safe chemical. Reactions have rarely been reported.

Preparing for a Spray Tan
To make your spray tan streak-free and last as long as possible, follow these tips:
  • Right before getting your spray tan, cleanse and exfoliate your entire body with using exfoliation cream and a loofah.
  • Do not use any lotion on your skin before getting a spray tan. The oils in the lotion will cause the tan to streak.
  • Whether at home or in a salon spray tan products will stain clothing, rugs, and floors. Cover floors and other areas that can be affected and dress according to your comfort level. Some tanning salons provide disposable bras and panties for spray tan sessions.
  • Once your spray tan is finished, wait a while to get dressed, You need to make sure that all of the spray tan is dried before putting your clothes back on or you will end up with streaks and stained clothing.
  • For the first twelve hours after a spray tan, try not to sweat or get your skin wet. The water will cause the product to streak and be uneven.
  • On the first day, it’s best to wear loose clothing. Tight clothing can also cause the spray tan to rub off and leave an uneven appearance.
  • In the days after your spray tan, do not exfoliate. The darkening of the skin takes place in the outer layer of skin which is basically dead skin cells. Exfoliating or scrubbing your skin will cause the dead skin cells to slough off faster and your tan will not last as long.
